What’s working to curb school germs

In clinic this week I’m seeing a bump in respiratory bugs among 5–8-year-olds. What simple, realistic routines are your families sticking with to cut spread — consistent 20-second handwashing after recess, a quick nasal saline rinse at bedtime, or something else that’s doable?

Curious if others find rinse too fussy compared to spray. We’ve had good luck with a quick saline nasal mist right after pickup — kids do “two squirts, then tissues” at the shoe bench, and it’s cut the runny-nose share-outs?

We finally got the ‘20 seconds’ to stick by putting a $3 sand timer next to the mudroom sink and making handwashing the first thing after backpacks hit the bench. Has anyone had luck getting teachers to keep a timer by the recess sinks? The nasal rinse was too fussy here, so we stick to a single saline mist at bedtime during peak weeks.
